Mix to Mobile relies on multicast traffic for stream discovery. If your setup isn’t working as expected, it may be due to multicast being blocked by your network router.
Network configurations vary widely, and different routers, access points, and switches handle multicast traffic in different ways. Because of this, it’s difficult to provide a one-size-fits-all solution. Below are some common reasons why multicast traffic might not be reaching your devices and general steps to check your network settings.

1. Some routers block multicast traffic by default

Many consumer and enterprise-grade routers block multicast traffic to prevent unnecessary network congestion. If Mix to Mobile is not discovering any streams, check your router’s settings for multicast-related options.

How to Fix:

  • Log in to your router’s web interface (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  • Look for Multicast Filtering, IGMP Snooping, or Multicast Forwarding settings.
  • If an option to Enable Multicast exists, turn it on.
  • Some routers may have a setting labeled “IGMP Proxy”, which should be enabled in some cases.

2. Enabling mDNS, Bonjour, or IGMP on your router

Some routers provide a explicit settings to enable mDNS (Multicast DNS) or Bonjour. In many cases this will also enable multicast traffic.

How to Fix:

  • Look for settings related to mDNS, Bonjour, or Multicast DNS in your router’s web interface.
  • Enable them if they are turned off.
  • Restart your router after making changes.

3. Multicast traffic may be blocked between wireless and wired networks

Some routers prevent multicast traffic from flowing between Wi-Fi and wired ethernet connections. This can cause devices on wired and wireless networks to be unable to see each other.

How to Fix:

  • Check your router’s Wi-Fi to LAN isolation or AP Isolation settings.
  • Disable Wi-Fi Client Isolation if it is enabled, as this can block multicast traffic between devices.
  • If your router has an IGMP Snooping option, try enabling or disabling it to see if it improves multicast forwarding.

Additional considerations

Because network devices, firmware versions, and configurations differ greatly, there is no single definitive answer for enabling multicast. If you don’t see the settings mentioned above, consult your router’s manual or support website to check if multicast features are available and how to configure them.

Here are a few additional troubleshooting tips:

  • Check firewall rules: Some routers have built-in firewalls that block multicast packets. Ensure that multicast traffic is allowed.
  • Reboot your router: Changes to network settings may require a full reboot to take effect.

If you’re still experiencing issues, try searching for “Enable multicast on [your router model]” to find specific instructions for your network hardware.
